Burger chain unveils nutty treat as Jomon sites added to UNESCO list
A Hakodate hamburger chain has unveiled a new menu item to commemorate the addition of a group of Jomon Era prehistoric sites in Hokkaido and northeastern Japan to UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list.
“Lucky Pierrot,” known for its themed burgers, presents the “Jomon Celebration Burger,” a hearty sandwich created by the chain’s president Miku Oh. Ingredients include “kuri” chestnuts, which are said to have been a staple among people of the Jomon Era.
In addition to three sweet chestnuts, bacon, fried egg, and two kinds of cheese are sandwiched between buns and seasoned with a special demiglace sauce.
Lucky Pierrot hopes its customers will “enjoy the texture of sweet chestnuts while forming in their minds the food culture of the Jomon period.”
The burger is priced at 638 yen (around U.S.$5.80) to eat in or 626 yen to take out. It is available at a total of 11 restaurants, including the bay area main outlet in Hakodate.
UNESCO decided last month to add to its list the sites which provide insight into the hunter-gatherer society and the spiritual culture of the Jomon period. The area comprises 17 ancient sites across the northern main island of Hokkaido and northeastern prefectures of Aomori, Iwate and Akita.
