Children Experience Honey Collecting at Bee Farm in Kunneppu

On August 20, the children of the certified childcare centre “Waku-Waku En” in Kunneppu Town in northern Hokkaido visited a bee farm in the town to see bees and to experience honey harvesting.

The effort to let children learn about the ecology of bees, beekeeping, and local industries started last year, and this was the first time for the children to experience honey collecting. About 30 children from the class of five-year-olds participated in the event.
After taking out the frames from the beehive and rotating them with the manually turned centrifuge, the bucket was filled with sweet smelling, golden honey. Voices of surprise came from the children and they proclaimed excitedly, “Wow, that’s amazing,” and, “It looks delicious.”
