The Niseko International Clinic in the Hirafu district of the town of Kutchan in the Niseko area of central Hokkaido, has established completely private examination rooms for outpatients that have a fever. The clinic also offers free PCR tests for asymptomatic people in Hokkaido. The clinic is strengthening its response system to the COVID-19 virus as the ski season begins and the number of people visiting the resort increases.

The new examination rooms were set up in a corner of the hospital’s parking lot. Four private rooms have been established in a 30-square-meter trailer house maintained under negative pressure to prevent the virus from getting out. In addition to a resident nurse, a doctor will also be available for consultation and examinations when necessary. The aim is to prevent the spread of infection within the hospital by separating patients suspected of having infectious diseases, from other patients. In addition to COVID-19, the hospital also conducts tests for influenza and streptococcus, which have similar symptoms.

Last winter, multiple clusters (groups of infected people) occurred in the town, and the infection spread. With outbreaks of new strains and other infections spreading across the country again this winter, the town aims to strengthen its medical system to ensure safe and rapid testing.

Free PCR testing for asymptomatic patients started on January 8, and about 20 people a day visit the clinic for testing. Hospital Director Moroi says, “Even though the symptoms are mild for most people, it can be fatal for the elderly and the like. In order to prevent the spread of the infection, we want people to feel free to visit the hospital,” Those with a fever or other symptoms are asked to contact the hospital in advance. For inquiries, please call the hospital on 0136-21-545-4.
