Otaru Dream Beach, first Hokkaido beach to open

“Otaru Dream Beach” in the Zenibako area of Central Hokkaido’s Otaru City opened on June 25, first among all Hokkaido recreational beaches. Following in last year’s footsteps, the beach opened with measures in place to prevent novel coronavirus spreading, and children rushed to enjoy summertime beach fun.

The high temperature in Sapporo’s Teine Ward, which is close to the beach, was 22.3 degrees Celsius as of 10:00 a.m. A kindergarten child who came to play in the water smiled and said, “The water is cold and fun.”

The Dream Beach Cooperative is thoroughly implementing pandemic countermeasures, such as reducing the number of seats in the beach huts to about half. Cooperative members held a ceremony praying for safety. The Cooperative Director commented, “The covid-19-related restrictions have continued for quite some time now, so we want to bring everyone good news from this beach.” The beach will be open until August 31.

According to the Hokkaido prefectural government, 20 recreational beaches will be open this season, including the Ishikari-hama beach (Aso Beach Ishikari) in the city of Ishikari. The number will not rise above approximately half of the 41 locations that were open in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.
