Ten Asahikawa and Furano taiko groups imbue powerful drum performances with feelings pent up for a year
On March 21, the Asahikawa Civic Culture Hall in Northern Hokkaido hosted a performance spotlighting taiko drum teams that have been losing opportunities to perform due to festival and event cancellations stemming from the novel coronavirus pandemic. 98 performers in ten groups from the cities of Asahikawa and Furano gave their all on the stage, funneling the desire to perform they had kept bottled up this past year.
The performance was organized by the Northern Hokkaido branch of the Nippon Taiko Foundation. The approximately 150 guests were dazzled by performances from each group that were so viscerally high in impact, drum vibrations resounded palpably in the audience seats.
