Tourism-promoting rooftop sauna demonstration project in downtown Sapporo

The Sapporo Chamber of Commerce and Industry launched the first ‘Sauna Town Sapporo’ demonstration project on the 27th-floor rooftop of the Sapporo Sosei Square building in Chuo-ku, Sapporo, in a bid to utilize the continuing sauna boom to promote tourism. Approximately 200 participants enjoyed the liberating feel of the outdoor saunas.

A total of 5 units, including a tent-type sauna and a ‘barrel sauna’ made from southern Hokkaido cedar, were installed. Participants bring their own hats and mats, sprinkle water on hot stones to generate steam – in a process known as löyly – to adjust the temperature to between 80 and 100 degrees Celsius, and sit on chairs while enjoying panoramic views of Sapporo.

A male company employee who visited with colleagues said “It was nice and refreshing. I have a dream of buying a barrel sauna for my home.”

The first stage of the event until November 8 sold out. The second stage will be held on the 1st and 4th floors of the Sapporo TV Tower on Odori Nishi 1-jo from November 23 to 28. The basic fee is 1,000 yen per person per hour, and tickets can be purchased in advance from the website below: (Japanese language only)
