Water basin adorned with flowers at Obihiro Shrine
Obihiro Shrine presented a “Hana Chozu,” which is a new practice of placing flowers in the shrine water basin used to purify the hands and the mind before praying there. Visitors could be heard commenting, “It’s so beautiful,” and, “This is pretty.”
The Hana Chozu trend has spread through shrines and temples in Kyoto and throughout Japan. Obihiro Shrine started joining in the custom last year. Different types of colourful flowers are set afloat in the basin, and this year also saw the addition of wind-bells. The colours of the flowers and sounds of wind-bells imparts a pleasant feeling of summertime coolness for the eyes and ears.
The Hana Chozu basin will be available from July 23 to 25 and some days in August.
