A sweet-smelling pink carpet – Takinoue moss phlox
In the town of Takinoue in the Okhotsk region of eastern Hokkaido, moss phlox is in full bloom at Shibazakura Taninoue Park, which is open for the first time in two years. On May 20, hillsides in the park were a vivid pink color and a sweet aroma drifted beneath the clear blue sky.
According to the local tourism association, the flowers usually reach full bloom around May 23 or 24, but this year were a little early. “It’s beautiful,” said a smiling husband and wife visiting from the town of Higashikawa in the Kamikawa region, “just like a pink carpet”.
The local tourism association is taking thorough measures against infection from the Covid-19 virus, including reducing the number of parking spaces and establishing temperature check points. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (admission until 5 p.m.); the admission fee for adults is 500 yen (elementary and junior high school students 250 yen).
