Sunflowers welcome planes at Memanbetsu Airport
A sunflower field in the town near Memanbetsu Airport in eastern Hokkaido is in full bloom.
Tourists and photo enthusiasts alike are delighted by the sight of airplanes appearing together with a “yellow carpet” of sunflowers when the planes take off and land.
Approximately 460,000 sunflowers are growing in a 2.3-hectare field. Sunflowers are used as green manure and are about one meter long. They started to bloom in early August.
On the east side of the field, there is a parking space and a view deck, but the best time to see the sunflowers is already over.
The town also used to plant sunflowers that bloom in autumn, but they stopped doing that from this year onward.
