Winter lights: Sapporo White Illumination starts

The 40th installment of Sapporo’s traditional “Sapporo White Illumination” started on November 20 in five sites, including Odori Park in Chuo-ku, Sapporo City. 730,000 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been lit up, producing a magical atmosphere.
The ceremony usually held on the first day of the event in normal years was cancelled this year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the LED lights were all switched on simultaneously at 4:30 pm at each site. The LED lights set up atop the grass plot at the 2-chome block of Odori Park shone blue to express gratitude towards medical workers. The Odori site played a new song crafted specifically for this year’s illumination by the popular rock band “GLAY” from Hakodate.
The Odori site (blocks 1-chome – 6-chome of Odori Park) will operate until December 25. The Sapporo Ekimae-Dori site (Kita 4 – Minami 4) will operate until February 11 of next year. The Minami 1-Jo Dori site (Nishi 1 – 3), Kita 3-jo site (Kita 2, Nishi 4 – Kita 3, Nishi 4), and Sapporo Station South Square site (Kita 5, Nishi 3) will all operate until March 14.
