【Kamuy landscapes】 Morning river fog on the Tokachi Plain
On a bitterly cold morning when the temperature drops below minus 20 degrees Celsius, a river fog appears along the banks of the river in the village of Sarabetsu in the Tokachi subprefecture.
The sun is still below the horizon and there is no wind or sound. It’s so cold that my tears freeze and hang from my eyelashes. The camera batteries – which are supposed to be fully charged – are weak, and I repeatedly change them while keeping them warm inside my down jacket. A photo shoot in the middle of winter is extremely difficult.
The morning sun appears from behind the hill. The riverside trees sparkle as the water vapor turns to rime. The river fog drifts in a low band as the strength of the cold air prevents it from rising. Everyday scenery begins to take on a veil of white, creating a wintery scene.
Despite my pursuit of the bitter cold, my heart was gradually filled with contentment.
