The deep forests and coastlines inhabited by wildlife. Introducing Hokkaido’s natural scenery that changes with the seasons
【Kamuy landscapes】 Magical scene of frost mist and light at the Kussharo lakeside
On an intensely cold early morning measuring 20 degrees below zero on the thermometer, water vapor rose from holes in the ice surface on Eastern Hokkaido Lake Kussharo, covering the lakeside area in a frost mist.
The sky above was beautiful and clear, without a single cloud. Heat near the ground surface was sapped away by the radiative cooling phenomenon, and the air was bitingly cold. Nearby a swan flock took flight. The sound of kicking the water surface and squawking reverberated throughout the area, but they could not be seen.
The frost mist diffused the light that grew stronger with the rising sun. Layered with tree shadows, this light produced a magical fantasy scene. It was both bright and yet strangely dark, both beautiful and yet somehow unsettling. It felt like a movie scene where a wizard would emerge from the misty forest any second.
As the sun climbed higher, the temperature rose quickly, and the water vapor dissipated. Before I knew it, the scenery had returned to normal.
