The athletes take a knee right before the match begins, displaying solidarity in a protest against racism

July 24 marks the second match in the first round of Women’s Olympic Football. Right before the match, all of the Japanese and Great Britain team members took a knee to protest racism.

The GB team announced that it would take a knee before the games even began, and several teams have also taken a knee from the first matches on July 21 onward, including the GB team. The Japan team did not take a knee at their match against Canada on July 21, but for this day (July 24), the team had a conversation and decided as a group to follow suit. Team captain Kumagai commented on the decision, “This has become an opportunity for us as well to think about racism, and we also have respect for what the GB team is doing.”

Originating as a reaction to the murder of an African American by a Caucasian police officer in the US last year, more and more athletes around the world have been taking a knee in protest. The Olympic rules include a restriction against political, religious, and racial demonstrations during the games, but this restriction has been partially relaxed for this year.
