Drift-ice tourism in the Okhotsk region reached its peak in late February. Amid fine weather on February 26, the ‘Aurora’ drift-ice sightseeing ship made mosaic-like patterns in its wake as it broke up the drift ice while leisurely cruising off the coast of Abashiri.

Oct. 30, 2021A strong cold front entered the skies above Hokkaido on October 17, bringing the first snow of the season to Wakkanai, Asahikawa and Abashiri. This was the season’s first snowfall on the plains, in the whole of Japan. As of 11:00 p.m., the coldest temperatures of this season were recorded at 141 of the 173 observation points in Hokkaido.

Feb. 13, 2021The Abashiri Local Meteorological Office announced the observation of the ‘first day of drift ice on the coast’ of the northeastern Hokkaido city of Abashiri on January 31. The sighting was 2 days earlier than average and 11 days earlier than last year.
