Bear feeding damage in dent corn field

Aerial footage has been recorded of Hokkaido Brown Bear feeding damage at a 2.2-hectare dent corn field in Kitami City that has been occurring since early August. Hokkaido Brown Bears especially seek out and eat the sweeter produce. Dent corn and beets, the raw material for sugar, are often targeted. According to the farmer who owns the field, Hokkaido Brown Bears are thought to be regularly descending the mountain and crossing the road to come eat dent corn. Consumed areas can measure up to five square meters for larger damage spots. Up to 30 ares (0.3 hectares) have been devoured to date. With head in hands, the farmer explains, “We have electric fencing installed, but they just dig holes in the ground and come through anyway.”
