Hoof of Giraffe Cared for Without Anesthetic at Obihiro Zoo
Rare training involving caring for the rear hoof of a reticulated giraffe without the use of an anesthetic has been successfully completed in Hokkaido, at Obihiro Zoo.
As giraffes are tall, the shock caused by the animal collapsing after being given an anesthetic may lead to death, making treatment of ailments difficult. As a result, training has taken place in which the giraffe obeys the instructions of a zoo keeper while the treatment is taking place.
The zoo’s giraffe suffered deformation of a hoof, but the keeper focused on the training in order to “extend the life of the giraffe for as long as possible,” resulting in the deformation being cured and the animal making a safe recovery.
