Recruitment for May 5 Olympic Marathon test event opened on March 9

At a working level meeting held in Sapporo on March 8, The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Hokkaido prefectural government and City of Sapporo decided on the application requirements for the Tokyo Olympic Marathon test event to be held in Sapporo on May 5. Recruitment of 2,500 participants to take part in the 10 km road-race event opened on March 9, and of these, 500 places will be prioritized for residents of Hokkaido. Guidelines regarding measures against infection from coronavirus aimed at participants were also displayed, with runners’ temperatures required to be recorded and submitted in the week before the event.

The 10 km road race will start at Odori 4-chome in Chuo-ku at 10:50 a.m., and comprise a lap of the north section of the Olympic Marathon course. Both male and female applicants must be at least 16 years old and be able to complete the 10-km-course within one-and-a-half hours. The entry fee is 5,000 yen. Applications will be accepted via the online RUNNET site until the 15th, with the results of the draw for successful applicants to be announced on the 22nd.

In the guidelines, participants are required to record and submit their temperatures before the event, via an exclusive app, and participants failing to do so will not be allowed to run in the race.

On the day of the race, runners will be required to start and run at least 1 meter apart. Even after the race, participants are required to continue recording their temperatures on the app for a further 2 weeks. If, on the day of the race, emergency measures have been issued in Hokkaido and/or self-restraint requests have been made with regard to events and the like, general public participation will be cancelled.

The organising committee will be publishing details with regard to anti-infection measures for roadside spectators sometime before early April.

One hundred and sixty male and female Tokyo Olympic Marathon athletes from various countries are due to compete in the “Sapporo Challenge Half Marathon 2021” event on May 5, which will start at 9:50 a.m. The participation of overseas athletes will be in accordance with the government’s immigration policy.
