Watanabe team wins special jury award in "Niseko Shootout"

“Niseko Shootout” is a photograph and video contest for skiing, snowboarding, and natural scenery. The prize winning works in the photograph category were announced on January 20. Two photographs capturing night scenery of Niseko, central Hokkaido’s ski resort area won the top prize special jury award and the next best prize, the excellent photograph award.
In the photograph category, participants enter works in pairs of one photographer and one skier or snowboarder. This year 34 pairs active in the Niseko area submitted photographs.
The special jury award winners were Watanabe Daisuke (27, Kutchan Town) and Matsuda Kentaro (28, Obihiro City), who depicted a snowboarder executing a flawless jump on a snow-covered nighttime mountain and the parabolic line traced by a handheld light.
The excellent photograph award selected by popular vote was given to Chris Smith (30, Kutchan Town) from Canada and Josh Fawcett (28, Kutchan Town) from the UK for their photograph capturing snow piled thickly atop a kei car (mini car) and the moment when a skier jumps over it.
Due to the coronavirus, this year there was no award ceremony. Both photographs can be seen on the Niseko Promotion Board website.
